didn't you F her BF when you were BFFs?

finally finished Mrs Warren's Profession (which is a bit late because i'm supposed to be reading one book per week) and i'm really quite surprised by the Victorian era books i've been reading. writing that i thought would be stuffy and cumbersome to follow is delightfully saucy thus making me want to read it more. but i'm still not done reading all the books i'm supposed to have finished by now. anyway, Mrs Warren's profession is about the oldest profession in the world: prostitution. if that doesn't make you want to read the book i don't know what will. the word 'prostitution' isn't used throughout the book, instead, Shaw uses euphemisms (one of them i can't figure out because Vivie writes it on a piece of paper and the audience doesn't know what it says but apparently it's a two word description of her mother's vocation. i'm hoping it's 'street walker'. i don't know why i like the term) so you'd think the scandal was toned down but Shaw throws in the possibility of incest in the mix. juicehhh. is Reverend Gardner Mrs Warren's baby daddy? if Vivie and Frank Gardner had gotten together, would their children have had webbed feet?

speaking of baby daddies, Oscar Wilde's A Woman Of No Importance also deals with women who get stuck with the baby while the daddy runs off and spreads his seed. scandal was the word of the day back then.

still in the middle of reading Jude The Obscure, which is also pretty good. So far, there's seduction, pregnancy scares, shotgun weddings, broken dreams, unrequited love, rebellion (by a whole school of girls. hoo ha!) and scandalous love affairs.

i'm liking them Victorians. so prim yet so transgressive.
